Andrew Bogut Chats AFL Season + Gives His Footy Predictions
This week marks one of the most exciting periods of the year for all Australians. Round 1 of the Australian Football League season kicks off. Even though the sport isn’t as well known in the United States, all Australians living overseas are still dedicated to following the game of their homeland, and that includes Andrew Bogut of the Golden State Warriors.
Bogut, who is a well-known Essendon Bombers fan, was excited to sit down and have a chat about all things AFL after his Warriors made light work of the Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday, sweeping their season series 4-0.
While he wasn’t too excited about how his beloved Bombers will fare in the league this season after their problems off the field across the past few years, he had some words of advice for the club around the group of top-up players that they have recruited this year, and Bogues remains positive about future of the team.
“There’s a lot of distractions with out club right now, but we’ve picked up some veteran guys that will make us competitive, but it’s been a pretty tough time for a Bomber fan,” Bogut said. “I’ll still be supporting them and hoping they do well, but success wise it might be a bit tough this season.
“It’s a great opportunity for the top-up players,” he continued. “A lot of the top up players were out of the AFL in different leagues around Australia – similar to the D-League here – so to get that opportunity, there might be some silver lining where they find some guys that have 4-5 good years left in them.”
As an NBA champion, Bogut had nothing but praise for the defending AFL premiers and winners of the past 3 grand finals, the Hawthorn Hawks, and their management for how they have continued to remain at the top of the competition over an extended period.
“They’re an unbelievable outfit to go three-peat in Australian Rules Football with the window so small to keep your squad together. They are getting a little bit older now but they keep their guys relatively healthy and they make little tweaks along the way, year on year they pick up a couple of good players here and there and it’s a credit to their management and the way they ran things.”
Andrew Bougut’s tips for the 2016 AFL Season:
Premiers: Fremantle Dockers
Leading Goal Kicker: Lance Franklin
Team to watch: Melbourne Demons
Bogut left us with a message for his fellow loyal Bombers supporters: “Stay with it, man. It’s been a long couple of years but the light’s at the end of the tunnel. Hopefully we can put it behind us, and think about the positive times going forward.”
